Q: Is HeyGPT a free app?

A: Yes, HeyGPT is free to use as much as you want. However, if you wish to unlock premium features, you will need to purchase a License Key.

Q: How does HeyGPT work?

A: HeyGPT is a static web app that does not utilize any backend servers. When you enter your API key, it is stored securely on your device. All subsequent API requests are sent directly from your browser to OpenAI’s server to interact with ChatGPT. In short, HeyGPT acts as an HTTP client for your ChatGPT API with a variety of convenient features.

Q: How many devices/users can use a single License Key?

A: Each License Key can be activated up to five times (usually enough for one user). If you need to use it on more devices / browsers, you can purchase additional License Keys. A license key activation is counted based on the number of locations where the License Key is entered and chat history is saved for continued use. For instance, if you use HeyGPT on Chrome browser on your laptop and phone, that will count as two activations. Please note that the License Key and chat history are saved locally per browser, so using HeyGPT on Chrome and Firefox would require two License Key entries, two different chat histories, and thus count as two license activations. Please be aware that resetting your browser’s data, which results in the removal of your license key and chat histories, and subsequently having to enter your license key again, will be considered as an activation towards your usage limit. This device limit is in place to guard against license key abuse and piracy.

Q: How is the API Key handled and stored by HeyPT?

A: Your API key is securely stored locally on your device. This app is static, which means it doesn’t have a backend. All the data is stored in your browser’s Indexed DB. Requests to OpenAI’s API are sent directly from your current browser, and can be viewed in the Network tab of the console.

Q: What’s the limit for the number of chat messages that can be stored?

A: HeyGPT uses IndexDB and the maximum limit is determined by your browser settings and current disk space. For example, Chrome and Chromium-based browsers allocate up to 80% of disk space. You can hold up to 60% by a single origin. For example, if you have 1TB of free disk space, you can store up to 600GB worth of chat messages.

Q: Does HeyPT encrypt my API Key in local storage?

A: HeyGPT offers an encryption feature for your API Key to provide additional security. To enable encryption with a password, you can click on the Manage Keys button in the sidebar and switch on Encrypt API Key. HeyPT uses the AES algorithm from the open-source CryptoS library to encrypt your API Key. Please note that this encryption feature only applies to your API Key and not to other elements like chat messages, prompts, or Al characters. The encryption process is executed locally on your device, and HeyGPT does not use a backend server. If you are using HeyGPT on multiple devices, you will need to encrypt your API key on each of them, and you can also set different passwords on different devices.
